The next few months were wonderful! Christmas was tranquil—no injuries and no drama. Then in early February, we attended Colin and Miranda’s spectacular wedding. It took place at a massive cathedral in DeSoto. I’d never seen Colin look so happy and Miranda was absolutely radiant when her father gave her away. At the reception, when Jackson wasn’t bringing me plates of food, he was whirled me around the dance floor. We couldn’t have asked for a better time. Mardi Gras came in March, and I was elated to have an excuse to eat as much King Cake as I wanted. I happily blamed my new sweet addiction on the baby.

The size of my belly seemed to have a direct effect on the amount of time Mom and Dad spent at Greenleaf. The bigger I got, the more they stuck around, so I hit the local travel agency for brochures and suggestions of places they might like to visit. I did my best talking up the various locations, knowing that if I got them to bite, it would afford me a couple of weeks of freedom. My fear was once the baby actually came, the quiet little family of three that I’d so happily imagined would suddenly turn into a disruptive, rowdy family of five. I shuddered to think of how the conversations with my parents would go.

Don, please tell Emily that it’s better if she uses a circular motion when putting lotion on the baby. Emily, you should use a circular motion. Don, tell Emily that the baby should be wearing long sleeves. Emily, the baby needs a sweater. Don, tell Emily that she needs to eat more calcium-rich foods. Emily, eat some cheese. Don, tell Emily that the baby’s been on the right breast too long. Emily, switch boobs.

It was a horror that I didn’t want to consider, so I threw myself into my work. Bridget, Chuck’s girlfriend, finished the classes required to become an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, and after riding with us for a while to learn the ropes, she took my spot as Chuck’s partner. She continued with her paramedic classes on her days off and some weekends. I’d get a new partner when I returned to work, but that was fine. Chuck and Bridget were great for each other; they deserved to be together. Since I was too far along to work in the field, Grant happily made concessions by assigning alternative duties, namely—his paperwork. My days were spent at headquarters in DeSoto auditing medical reports.

My feelings for Jackson flourished and we settled quite comfortably into a routine. He was home nearly every evening, Wednesdays were reserved for dinner and a movie, and our weekends were spent exploring nearby towns. He again offered marriage, but I declined. I probably should’ve jumped on his proposal, and I wasn’t exactly opposed to it; I just didn’t want our marriage to feel forced or rushed simply because I was having a baby. He was incredibly attentive and caring, escorting me to every doctor’s appointment, every ultrasound, every midnight ice cream and nacho run.
